Archive Description

A chip with a backpack. This microcontroller features a "piggyback" socket on top, allowing engineers to plug a standard EPROM memory chip directly into the CPU.

This allowed for rapid prototyping—you could change the software by swapping the EPROM without removing the CPU. It’s a clever, physical solution to a problem that is now solved by flash memory.
